terms

Terms of use.

Effective September 18, 2026

who you are dealing with

Mudlark is made, sold, and supported by Jeffrey Hilger, an independent software developer in Irvine, California, United States. “We” in these terms means Jeffrey Hilger.

Business address: 2211 Michelson Drive, Suite 900, Irvine, California 92612, United States.

who sells it

Mudlark is sold through two channels. In both, payment is taken by a merchant of record rather than by us directly.

  • Mac App Store: Apple is the seller. Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement and the App Store terms for your country apply to that purchase, including refunds, which Apple handles.
  • Direct download: the license is sold by Lemon Squeezy (Link, LLC, formerly Lemon Squeezy LLC, a Stripe company), which acts as merchant of record and authorized reseller. Lemon Squeezy takes payment, issues the receipt and invoice, and charges and remits VAT or sales tax where it applies. Its buyer terms cover the checkout. The license you receive is granted by us under the terms on this page.

the license

Buying Mudlark gives you a personal, non-transferable license to install and use the app. The license does not expire. For the direct download, one license activates Mudlark on up to three Macs at a time, and deactivating the app on one Mac frees that slot for another. On the App Store, the number of Macs is governed by Apple’s terms, and Family Sharing is supported. You may not resell, sublicense, or share your license key, and you may not remove or work around the license check.

the trial

The direct download runs the full app for 14 days without an account, an email address, or payment details. When the trial ends the app becomes read-only: your notes stay open and you can still export them anywhere the app exports to. Buying a license and activating it in Settings restores editing. The App Store version has no trial.

updates

Every update to Mudlark is included in the purchase price, major versions included. We plan to keep developing the app, but we cannot promise any particular feature, release date, or support for a future version of macOS. If development ever stops, the version you have keeps working, and your notes are plain text files that open without it.

refunds

If Mudlark is not working for you, email [email protected] within 14 days of your purchase and we will refund it. Refunds for direct purchases go back through Lemon Squeezy to the original payment method. Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. If you live in the EU or the UK, nothing here limits your statutory rights as a consumer, including any right to cancel a distance purchase.

your notes

Your notes are your own. Mudlark stores them as plain files on your Mac and never sends them anywhere unless you export them. Nothing in these terms gives us any right to your content. The privacy policy describes what the app and this site do with data.

no warranty

Mudlark is provided as is. We test each release, but we cannot promise it is free of bugs or that it will suit a particular purpose, and to the extent the law allows we disclaim implied warranties, including warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. Keep a backup of anything that matters to you.

limits on liability

To the extent the law allows, our liability for any claim arising from Mudlark or this site is limited to the amount you paid for your license. We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, including lost data, lost profits, or lost time. Some jurisdictions do not allow these limits, so they may not apply to you in full.

this website

The text, images, and code on mudlark.io are copyright Jeffrey Hilger or used under license. Third-party names on the site, including Apple, Notion, Craft, Todoist, Bear, Ulysses, Obsidian, iA Writer, and Things, belong to their owners and are used only to say what Mudlark works with.

governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California and the United States. If you are a consumer in another country, you also keep any rights that the law of your country gives you and does not let you waive.

changes

If these terms change, the effective date at the top of this page changes with them. Changes do not take away a license you have already bought.
